Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated under the core area of Agasthyamala Biosphere reserve (one of the finest biosphere reserves in India), Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is well-known for its breathtaking beauty of lush forests and crystal clear streams. Acquiring an area of up to 171 square km, the main attraction of the sanctuary is a lion-tailed macaque (also known as the wanderoo, is an Old World monkey endemic to the Western Ghats of South India) that attracts visitors from all parts of the globe.

Flora and Fauna

Many wildlife enthusiasts have claimed Shendurney to be one of the best places for sighting rare species of animals, including Lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Nilgiri Marten, and Brown palm civet. Several colorful birds can also be spotted like Lesser Kestrel, Wood Snipe, Lesser Fish eagle and Nilgiri Wood Pigeon.

The floral diversity of Shendurney is equally magnificent with rare plants such as Mesua ferrea, Garcinia spicata, Cinnamomum verum, Gluta travancorica, and Gordonia obtuse, available in the sanctuary.

Other vegetation includes West coast tropical evergreen forest, Southern hilltop tropical evergreen forest, Southern secondary moist mixed deciduous forest, Myristica swamp forest, and grasslands.

Though Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is open all year round, the best time to plan your visit is from October to February.
