Times Gone By:

Flipping to the pages of the olden times, Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica dates back to the 16th century when the Portuguese missionaries arrived in 1500 CE. The construction started after the first Portuguese Viceroy, Dom Francisco de Almeida, got approval from the Raja of Kochi to build a church. Finally, on May 3, 1505, the church’s foundation was laid, the feast day of the ‘Invention of the Holy Cross.’ Thus, the church was named Santa Cruz.

Over the years, this Santa Cruz Basilica has undergone intense demolition and repair. The church you see today was consecrated on November 19, 1905.

Splendid Architecture:

If you love architecture, visiting Santa Cruz Basilica in Fort Kochi will be a delight. The structure consists of two lofty spires that welcome all from a distance. The exterior of the church is white-washed, while the interiors are pastel-colored.

The Gothic-style architecture on the inside, with beautiful arches and an impressive altar, is quite appealing. The acclaimed Italian painter, Fr. Antonio Moscheni, and his disciple, De Gama of Mangalore, furnished the altar.

On your visit to Santa Cruz Basilica in Kochi, you will witness the splendidly decorated columns with frescoes and murals. There are also seven large canvas paintings, including a lovely replica of the ‘Last Supper’ by Leonardo da Vinci, which is truly a treat for the eyes. The ceilings are also adorned with paintings that display scenes from the Via Crucis of Christ. The stained glass windows are also a major highlight of the church.
