Banasura Sagar Dam Wayanad - Timings, History, IHPL

Banasura is the largest earthen dam in India and the second-largest in all of Asia. The Banasura Sagar Dam is 20 kilometers from Kalpett’s district administrative center.The dam is quite close to Lake Karalad, another tourist spot in Wayanad.

The Banasura Sagar Dam is named for Mahabali’s son, the Asura King Banasura. The Banasura Sagar dam, a significant tourist destination, is located at the base of Banasura Hill. In the Kozhikode district, the dam supplies water to the Kakkayam reservoir. In addition, the Banasura Sagar Dam aids the irrigation-related Kakkayam Hydroelectric Power Project.

Legend

The dam boasts abundant scenery, with hills in the backdrop and a vast water area. The mountains in the background are the Banasura Hills (the third most prominent peak in the Western Ghats). The dam was erected across the Karamanathodu River, a tributary of the Kabini River.

If legends are to be believed, Banasura, the Asura king, undertook severe penance at the hill’s top point, and thus the place has been named after him. In addition, the Banasura hills and the dam are famous as starting points for trekking expeditions.

History

The Indian Banasura Sagar Project focuses on being the support of the Kakkayam Hydroelectric Power Project and contributing to making available water for drinking and irrigation purposes.

Highlight

At the time of the monsoon, the surroundings of the dam become all the more beautiful. During the rain, tourists can also see tiny islands in the dam’s reservoir after the flooded pool merges with the surroundings. The dam’s clean, calm waters and small, scattered islands delight.

The place is also quite popular as a picnic spot with a stunning view among locals and tourists.
