How to Reach Hemkund Sahib

Hemkund Sahib, known as Gurudwara Sri Hemkunt Sahib Ji, is a Sikh and Hindu place of worship in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. It is devoted to Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. The Gurudwara faces a Glacial Lake, surrounded by seven mountain peaks, each adorned by a Nishan Sahib (a Sikh holy triangular flag) on its cliff. It is approached from Govindghat on the Rishikesh Badrinath Highway. The main town near Govindghat is Joshimath.

Hemkund Sahib By Air

The take-off point for Hemkund Sahib is the town of Govindghat, about 275 kilometers from Rishikesh. The 13-kilometer trek is along the well-maintained path to the village of Ghangaria (also called Govinddham). This path can be covered either by a walk or a pony ride. Finally, a 1,100 meter (3600 ft.) climb on the stone path’s 6 km hard surface leads to Hemkund.

From Delhi, tourists can take the train to Haridwar and then travel by bus to Govindghat via Rishikesh. From here, one starts a trek along with Ghangaria village. This 13 km path can be covered through walking or a pony ride. After that, another 6 km stoned path (3600 feet) makes Hemkund accessible. Recently, a helicopter service between Govindghat and Ghangaria has also been started that takes about 5 minutes.

Tourists can drive from Delhi to Govindghat, about 500 kilometers, taking around 18 hours to cover. After this, you have to cover a path to the village of Ghangaria. You can either take a pony ride or walk (13 km). From here, cross another 6 km of the stoned pathway to arrive at the Hemkund Gurudwara.

How to reach Hemkund Sahib from Haridwar

The straight line distance between Hemkund Sahib and Haridwar is 285 km. However, the travel distance from Haridwar to Hemkund Sahib is 322 km and 873 m.

You can travel by train to Haridwar (the nearest city with a railway station) at 320 km, from the last road that leads to the gurdwara.

Buses are available from Haridwar to Hemkund Sahib, which takes about 6 hours and 22 mins to reach. However, this time may vary due to road conditions and travel route.
