The Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand is among the most revered pilgrimage circuit, which is undertaken by a large number of devotees. The challenging terrain of the Himalayan mountain range does not hinder the conquest of spiritual fulfillment. According to Hinduism, every circumambulation or pilgrimage follows a clockwise pattern. Therefore, the Chardham Yatra commences with Yamunotri, followed by Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The route passes through the heavenly beauty of towering snow-covered mountains, lush valleys, land interspersed with roaring rivers, glaciers, lakes, and remote villages. The beauty is such that it is easy to believe that the gods reside here hence the name ‘Dev Bhoomi’.

Yamunotri Dham

You can commence your journey by road from Delhi or arrive at Haridwar and then proceed to Rishikesh. Rishikesh/ Dehradun to Narendra Nagar to Chama to Brahmkhal to Barkot is around 117 km. Barkot to Sayana Chatti to Hanuman Chatti to Phool Chatti to Janki Chatti is the next leg covering 41 km. From Janki Chatti, begin a trek of 6 km from Yamunotri temple. You can either go on foot or hire a pony or a palanquin. On the way, stop at Saptarishi Kund, Surya Kund, and Divya Shila, each of the sites has religious significance.

Yamunotri Dham is located in Garhwal alongside the River Yamuna, hence the name and the temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Also, being the sister of Lord Yama, a visit to the shrine is said to protect her from an untimely and painful death.

Gangotri Dham

After the darshan of Yamunotri, proceed to Uttarkashi at a distance of 123 km. The ancient town of Uttarakhand shares the name of the holy city ‘Kashi’, now Varanasi. Like its namesake, the town is a holy destination full of shrines people visit for divine blessings. Halt at the town to pay obeisance at the holy temples of Uttarkashi. Next, proceed to Bhatwari and then onwards to Gangnani and Harsil, a journey of 77 km. The holy shrine of Gangotri is only an hour away by road.

Gangotri Dham is the sacred shrine of Goddess Ganga. Said to be the origin of the river, the temple worships the River Goddess who descended on Earth through the matted locks of Lord Shiva as blessings of the King Bhagirath. The shrine is set on the banks of the River Bhagirathi at the height of 3200 meters. Pay a visit to the white-marble shrine dedicated to the River Goddess for divine blessings.

Kedarnath Dham

After the blessings of Gangotri temple, get back to Harsil. Follow the route back to Uttarkashi and proceed to the town of Guptkashi, almost a 100 km odd distance. Chose to spend time in the beautiful town of Uttarakhand. Like its name, which translates to ‘Hidden Varanasi, ’ Guptkashi has many hidden gems, such as ancient temples and holy sites. Proceed to Gaurikund as you pass through Sonprayag, about 14 km by road. Phata is on the way, a starting point for the helicopter Yatra to Kedarnath. However, you proceed by road to Gaurikund, about 5 km away. 

The last leg of the yatra is the trek of 14 km to the shrine of Kedarnath. The beautiful path with mesmerizing views can be covered on foot, hiring horses and palanquins. Helicopter services are also available, which start from Phata.

One of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India, Kedarnath, is Lord Shiva’s abode at the height of 3586 meters in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. The roaring Mandakini River flows in a noisy torrent while the environs are blissful and tranquil. The 8th-century temple is replete with beauty and holiness that touches all hearts. Kedarnath, the toughest Yatra of the Chardham in Uttarakhand. Besides the road route, the temple of Lord Shiva, also one of the holy 12 Jyotirlingas in India, requires a tough trek of 14 km.

Badrinath Dham

After Kedarnath darshan, gets back to Gaurikund. Proceed by road to Guptkashi, take the route via Chopta to Chamoli, and proceed to Joshimath. Halt at the winter shrine of Lord Badrinath. Later, travel onwards to Govindghat and then Badrinath. The journey is almost 610 km which can be covered in 6-7 hours with an overnight stay in Guptkashi or Joshimath.

The holy shrine of Badrinath is not just part of Chota Char Dham but the larger Char Dham circuit in India. One of the holy Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu is set on the banks of the swift-flowing River Alaknanda. Besides the temple, there are many other important places in the vicinity. Explore places such as Mana Village, Tapt Kund, Neelkanth Peak, Narad Kund, Ganesh Cave, and Vyas Cave, among others.
