Dhar was ruled by the Sultans of Delhi during the Mughal Period. Dhar held a very prominent place and was the capital of Malwa until Mandu gained prominence. It was a prime centre in the Revolt of 1857.

It is believed that just at a distance of about 3 km from Dhar is the place where Kalidas meditated.
