Kollam Beach, or Mahatma Gandhi Beach, is one of the twin beaches of Kollam. Mahatma Gandhi Park is located adjacent to the beach, which was inaugurated in 1961 by the then Vice President of India, Zakir Hussein. This is a major attraction and pulls a huge number of tourists every day.
A major landmark of the beach is the 144-tall lighthouse that was built in 1902. A part of Kollam Beach is a major port for international trade of spices and is one of Malabar’s oldest ports. A short distance from Kollam beach lies a popular attraction of Kerala, Ashtamudi Lake. The lake is popular for houseboat cruising. The visitors enjoy short canal cruises to the nearby island village of Tangasseri. Just like in Kochi, you can also spot Chinese nets on Kollam Beach.
