History

Emperor Akbar built Agra Fort in 1565, which his successors, including Shah Jahan, further embellished with marble structures. It was initially a military establishment but later evolved into a royal residence. The fort has four gates, two of which are main, Delhi Gate and Amar Singh Gate. Delhi Gate was Akbar’s favorite, now under the military personnel, and Amar Singh Gate is the only one used for entry into Agra Fort. It played a crucial role in the history of the Mughal Empire and witnessed significant historical events, including Shah Jahan’s imprisonment by his son Aurangzeb.

The best time to visit the Agra Fort is from October to March. During these months, the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing, allowing visitors to explore this historic site. Note: If you are visiting during summer, try exploring between 4-6 PM or early in the morning.

By Air: The nearest airport is Agra’s Kheria Airport, approximately 13 km away. The flight from Delhi takes about 40 minutes. By Train: The central railway station is Agra Cantonment, about 5 km from Agra Fort. There are regular trains connecting Agra to major cities in India. By Road: Agra is well-connected by road with regular buses and private taxis. The nearest bus stop is Idgah Bus Stand, about 4 km from Agra Fort. Local Transport: Auto rickshaws, cycle rickshaws, and e-rickshaws are readily available for commuting within Agra. You can even hire rental taxis or book Ola or Uber to get there.
