Legends associated with Mankameshwar Temple

According to local lore, this temple in Agra is closely linked to the Hindu god Lord Shiva. It is also said that Lord Shiva himself established the temple during the Mahabharata era. When Lord Krishna was born in Mathura and moved to Gokul, Shiva left Mount Kailash to visit him. During his journey, Shiva vowed to install a Linga at the place where he stayed overnight if he saw the infant Krishna. The following day, he met Krishna, and while returning from Gokul, he stopped here in Agra to install his Linga. Further, he declared that it would grant the wishes of devotees. This legend adds a deep spiritual significance to the Mankameshwar Temple, making it a place of worship and a site of great mythological importance in the Hindu tradition.
