Best time to visit Chopta
The main trekking routes reopen in the summer, bringing the most people Chopta has ever experienced. Therefore, the summer months of March to May are the ideal time to visit Chopta. The hill station has significant seasonal fluctuations because of its temperate climate and wooded terrain. The same region, which appears verdant and green in the summer, turns arid and snowy in the winter. This has a few restrictions on where to go, but it also guarantees a great time in the bitter weather.
How to reach Chopta
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. The distance from Jolly Grant Airport to Chopta is about 228 km. If you are an international traveler, a flight from New Delhi to Dehradun is a good option. After reaching Dehradoon, you can easily book a taxi (cab) or take public transport. Chopta hill station has good road connectivity from Uttarakhand’s significant cities and towns. Also, Rishikesh is the nearest railway station, 209 km away from Chopta.
Accommodation in Chopta
Chopta is, in all its importance, the base camp for the Tungnath–Chandrashila trek. A few hotels and Swiss tents are available in the region, starting in Makkuband, Dugalbitta, Baniyakund, and Chopta. All of them offer basic facilities for nominal charges. For families and groups, you can consider Mayadeep Resort in Chopta. Earlier, camping was another popular option for staying in Chopta. However, due to a recent High Court order, camping in Chopta is prohibited for the time being until the ban is lifted.
Where to eat in Chopta?
Being a small hamlet, Chopta doesn’t offer many dining options. However, the place has some local eateries and roadside food stalls (dhabas) providing famous North Indian and Chinese dishes. Although, some resorts may have in-house restaurants that serve selected delectable cuisines. Some famous restaurants in Chopta are Shri Tungeshwar Rajkamal Hotel and Restaurant, Valley View Hotel, The Bunker House Cafe & Stay, Swad Sadhan Rudraprayag, Butola Hotel & Restaurant, and more.
How to get around in Chopta?
Hiring a cab is the most convenient way to get around Chopta. However, you can also walk to the locations. In addition, as part of the Uttarakhand tour package, you can receive quick transfers, making your journey simple and convenient.
Travel Tips
- The trek route from Chopta is easy to moderate and can quickly be done with kids.
- It snows heavily in winter at Chopta and Tungnath, and the trek tends to get tricky, but the views cannot be expressed in words.
- The last ATM is in Ukhimath (not sure about working conditions), but it is better to carry cash with you. You’ll find previous working ATMs in Srinagar.
- The nearest market is in Ukhimath (30 km before Chopta), so carry all the necessary items during your stay in Chopta.
