Rashtriya Lalit Kala Kendra, Lucknow was incorporated in the year 1983 as a regional center of the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. The land for constructing the Centre was provided by the Government of Uttar Pradesh and it was inaugurated on 30th April 1983.

Lucknow Rashtriya Lalit Kala Kendra houses a full-fledged workshop and studio facilities for the artists’ community of this region. Its Painting Studio can accommodate around 20 working artists at a time.

The Sculpture Workshop has the facility to work in all materials and can seat up to 10 artists. The Ceramic Workshop is operational with all facilities for working on wheel (electric and kick wheel) and equipped with electric kilns that has the temperature capacity that increase to 128 degree celsius. A number of programs such as Camps, Workshops, Demonstrations, Memorial Lectures, Slide Shows, Exhibitions and Symposia are initiated all year through.

In recent times, with the 50% contribution from the Government of Uttar Pradesh the Kendra is being expanded and it will be completed by 2005. Fully air conditioned galleries of the size 2740 sq ft and 1600 sq ft, a multipurpose auditorium of 1680 sq ft. and a Library is being set up in the new wing of the Kendra.

Rashtriya Lalit Kala Kendra in Lucknow has many functions to perform and one of its most significant activities is the propagation of knowledge relating to Indian Art in an interesting way. The point was to make the man in the street conscious of his cultural heritage. With this idea in mind, the Akademi had planned a series of noteworthy monographs, the art journals and portfolios as early as 1954, the year of Akademi’s inception.
