Located in the center of Agartala, Ujjayanta Palace was constructed by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya in 1901. It combines Indo-Saracenic architecture with extensive Mughal gardens. Presently, the Ujjayanta Palace is a state museum that provides insight into Tripura’s past.

Ujjayanta Palace has a glorious past. It has been the residence of many rulers of Tripura since it was first established. Thus, the architectural styles vary. Sir Alexander Martin designed this 800-acre grandeur palace in the Indo-Saracenic style with a Mughal-inspired palatial garden with a lake in front. Not only this, but the complex and its vicinity housed numerous temples.

This Tripura palace features three large domes, the largest being 86 feet high and rests on top of a four-story central tower. The floors are tiled, while the front doors are beautifully carved. The main block of this palace comprises the Throne Room, the Durbar Hall, the Library, and the Reception Hall. Later, a Chinese Room was built for artisans brought from China.

Some new attractions added to the Ujjayanta Palace are the musical fountain at the main entrance and the night-time floodlights. In addition, formal Mughal gardens with fountains look stunning. Further, two large artificial ponds featuring pools and fountains adorn the garden.

Ujjayanta Palace is located in Agartala, which is well-connected by air, rail, and road. Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport is the closest airport to the palace, located about 12 kilometers away. Regular flights connect Agartala with major cities such as Kolkata, Guwahati, and Delhi. You can take a cab or bus from the airport to the palace.  Agartala also has its own railway station, which provides convenient train services to Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati. You can take a rickshaw or a cab from the station to get to the palace. Taxis and buses run regularly between Agartala and other parts of Tripura and neighboring states.

The pillars of Jagannath Temple are in the shape of square and pyramidal cones.

Drive 26 km to reach Kamalasagar Kali Temple from the palace. It is situated on a hillock overlooking a lake named Kamala Sagar, offering breathtaking views, and thus, is often visited by locals for picnics. Maharaja Dhanya Manikya developed this lake in the late 15th century, which houses an image of the goddess that resembles Dashabhuja Durga or Mahishasurmardini. The image is made of sandstone and is worshiped as Maa Kali. There is also a Shivlingam at the feet of the image, giving this temple the name Kalibari.

  1. Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the most famous attractions in Tripura is Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, located around 31 km away from the palace. It is a biodiversity hotspot, housing various animals, birds, reptiles, and birds. Some famous mammals include Rhesus macaque, Pigtailed macaque, Barking, Deer, Wild Pigs, Slow loris, Leopards, and Jungle Fowls. Some famous birds include Winged Storks, Whistling Teal, and White Ibis. The sanctuary also features a botanical garden, a deer park, and a zoo.

Translated to “water palace,” Neermahal is located in the center of Rudrasagar Lake, around 50 km from Ujjayanta Palace. Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Debbarman Manikya built this palace in 1930 as his summer palace, now one of its kind in India. The palace features Mughal architectural styles, with marble and stone used extensively. Many migratory birds encircle the lake in the winter, making this attraction a birdwatcher’s delight. Neermahal Water Festival, a three-day event, is the biggest highlight of this palace, celebrated every year in August.
