Samayapuram Mariamman Temple is one of the famous Temples of the South and is mostly visited by the tourists. The Samayapuram Mariamman Temple has been dedicated to Lord Mariamman. He is the manifestation of Shakti of the Mother Goddess on the earth. Mariamman is also revered throughout India as the incarnation of Shakti on the earth.

She is associated with curative powers by the local inhabitants. They believe that the Goddess Mariamman is capable of curing diseases like Small Pox and Chicken Pox. There is a legend behind this temple Samayapuram Mariamman Temple.

It says that when Lord Shiva swallowed the Kaalakoota poison he created Goddess Kali from that poison and so, henceforth she assumed the name Kali. The Lord Mariamman is an incarnation of that Kali on earth. She is also known as Mahamaayi or Seethala Gouri.

Another legend says that King Dasaratha the father of Lord Ram used to worship at the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple. The idol of the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple was under the possession of the Vijaynagar Monarchs.

When the state of Tamil Nadu was on the verge of destruction the idol was brought by a palanquin to the present town. Here a temple had been established and t was named as Samayapuram Mariamman Temple. The temple has a number of shrines; they include the idol of Mariamman, Karuppannasaami who is a local deity.

Offerings at the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple, Trichy include jaggery, salt, lentils, jewelry by the ardent devotees etc. Annual Festivals are held here during the Thai Poosam in the Tamil months of Pankuni and Chittarai.
