Laid in 1848, this Botanical Garden is spread over 22 hectares and sits on the foothills of Doddabetta Peak, the highest peak of Nilgiri Hill Ranges. The garden is divided into sections: Lower Garden, New Garden, Italian Garden, The Conservatory, and The Nursery. It houses a thousand species of plants, shrubs, ferns, herbal, bonsai plants, and trees. In the center, a 20-million years old fossilized tree trunk is placed. The garden’s boundless and expansive collection of flora makes it one of the best attractions of Ooty, which is often flocked by researchers and nature lovers. The best thing about this garden is its climate; it turns into a haven, especially during summers when the maximum temperature does not go beyond 28 degrees Celsius. Toda Mund is another reason to visit this place. It is amongst the highlights of the Botanical Garden and gives an insight into the Todas tribe of Ooty. Every year, at least 1.5 lac tourists visit the garden during the Flower Show that spans two days. During the festival, Indian and Japanese flower arrangements, vegetable carving, flower rangoli, Bonsai, and floral decorations are majorly enjoyed by its attendees. The Botanical Garden in Ooty’s foundation was laid down in 1848 and was designed to have a terraced terrain. The garden’s slope has an ascent of 2500 meters, due to which it enjoys a temperate climate for the plants and shrubs to grow. There are many rare tree species, among which the cork tree is unique, one of its kind in the country. Besides, the paperbark tree, the monkey puzzle tree, and an old fossilized tree estimated to be 20 million years old are the highlights of Ooty Botanical Garden. Cedrus deodara, Cupressus funebris, Araucaria bidwillii, etc., are the other trees in the lower garden. The newer section of Botanical Gardens Ooty has a beautiful rose garden with hybrid roses like Floribunda and Polyanthus. The emblems of the Government of Tami Nadu and the Government of India are displayed here in the form of flower beds and carpet beds. Many tree species are present here, along with a pond with aquatic plant varieties. As the name suggests, this part of the garden was laid down by the Italian prisoners after World War I. Perennial flowers like larkspur, dahlia, and salvia, along with other species, are found here. The garden is built in typical Italian style, and a crescent-shaped lake gives way to lotus and other aquatic plants. It is a publicly accessible building for classifying various flowering plants into groups. Tuberous begonia, Coleus, Geranium, Chrysanthemum, and others are present here. The Nurseries have glass houses and terraces used to breed exotic plants. It lies 300 feet above the lower lawns and consists of Begonias, Orchids, Ferns, Cacti, Succulents, and Bulbous plants. The terrace is used to grow plants for cut flowers, seeds, and trial purposes. A flower show is observed at the Botanical Gardens in Ooty every year in May. The show displays a variety of flowers and rare plant species. It is celebrated for two days, during which the show’s inauguration is held on the first day and the prize distribution on the second. The garden is decorated with beautiful flower arrangements, vegetable carvings, Indian and Japanese decorations, and bonsai and flower rangolis. During the Flower Show, one may see 250 exhibitors, including many govt. departments and voluntary agencies presenting 150 cut flower varieties, 50 potted plant varieties, different types of tropical & temperate vegetables, and also tropical & temperate fruits. A garden competition is held in which the Private Cottage Gardens, Estate Gardens, Public Gardens, and others participate. About 200 gardens compete in this event. And this competition is held before the flower show, and cash prizes are distributed to the best performers.History of Ooty Botanical Gardens
