The railway museum in New Delhi is a national museum of its kind situated in the heart of the capital city of India. The Railway Museum or the National Railway Museum of India was established in 1977 about 30 years ago. This Railway Museum showcases old models of Railway engines and the relevant locomotives, old railway models and much more which is worth a visit. National Railway Museum also helps to form an idea about the functioning of Indian railway 30 years ago.

What to see:

It tells you about the mechanisms used to run trains which were essentially not driven by electricity at that time. Railway Museum New Delhi has a wide and assorted collection of atypical and antique steam locomotives, carriages, saloons and other railway relics. The museum premise houses both live exhibits as well as working/non-working models in its indoor gallery. The museum runs a toy train around its grounds on regular days except the holidays. On some special days or on an occasion the Old Patiala State Steam Monorail is steamed up and runs on its track around the museum to entertain the guests and tourists.

National railway Museum Delhi is a small arena consisting of railway memorabilia. The museum artifacts also include the skull of an elephant killed when it collided with a mail train in Bengal, in 1894. The last steam engine whereas the first electric-powered engine of the1930s are kept on display. One of the most interesting features are the special carriages belonging to British and Indian lords, namely the Viceregal dining car, the Maharaja of Mysore’s personal train with both sleeping and day compartments and the Gaekwar of Baroda’s Saloon.
