India’s Independence Day is the eve to commemorate the nation’s freedom. On 15th August 1947, India achieved freedom from British rule. Since then,  the date is celebrated as the Independence Day of India annually. The day is observed as a national festival and is treasured with great passion all over the country.

History of Independence Day in India

As soon as the clock struck twelve, on 15th of August, in the year 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. He further read out the renowned speech ‘Tryst with Destiny’ which announced the independence of India. This historic moment ended 3 centuries of British colonial rule in India. The country no longer remained the summer retreat of the British Sahibs.

The significance of Independence Day

India’s Independence Day is certainly an occasion to celebrate our freedom and to pay united respect to all those people who gave their lives for our independence. But there is something more to it. The day also marks the coming together of more than 400 princely states to form one nation – India. Probably, this was the biggest political success of the country.

How is Independence Day celebrated?

Preparations for the Independence Day Festival in Delhi begins a month in advance. All the major roads are festooned with tri-color flags. All the buildings in Delhi, which are of national importance, are bedecked and illumined. Furthermore, Independence Day is celebrated with flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs in the state capitals.

The celebrations related to the Independence Day include only merrymaking and festivities, no rituals at all. Schools and colleges mark the day with cultural activities, flag hoisting, drills and distribution of sweets. The day is celebrated by both the private as well as the Government organizations. The Prime Minister of the country addresses the nation after hoisting the National Flag at the Red Fort. Independence Day is also observed by flying kites by people. Various programs are telecasted on the television throughout the day.

The Independence Day Festival in Delhi starts in the morning and continues throughout the day till evening.
