Shillong Peak

Shillong Peak is a major tourist attraction located 10 km from the main city, which offers magnificent views. Situated at an altitude of 1,965 m above sea level, Shillong Peak is the highest point in Shillong. You can capture the most breathtaking views of the city, the lofty Himalayas, splendid waterfalls, and Bangladesh plains.

Shillong Peak is located at the air force base and thus, serves as a radar station for the Indian Air Force. Therefore, the visitors have to submit a valid ID proof and get approval to enter the center under constant surveillance. You can also use the telescope for a bird’s-eye view of Shillong that will make your trip to Shillong Peak memorable. You can trek up the hill to reach Shillong Peak for the best views, but it is often bounded by heavy fog.

It is said that Shillong has gotten its name from this peak itself. Local tales say that ‘Lei Shyllong’, the patron deity lives in the hills and protects Shillong from all evils. Also, the U Shulong site atop the peak is considered sacred, and in spring every year, a ritual is also performed here.

Best Time to Visit Shillong Peak

September to May is the perfect time to visit Shillong Peak. During this time, the weather is pleasant and you can see clear views of Shillong city, the Himalayas, and Bangladesh. You can expect irregular rainfall, but it is much less than in the monsoon months from June to August.

You can visit Shillong Peak from 9 am to 3.30 pm. The place is closed on Wednesday.

INR 30 per person for entry and INR 10 for the telescope (1 minute per person).

Shillong peak is located around 10 km away from the main city. A cab or taxi will take around 40 min to take you here.
