Dwarkamai Masjid is the holy place where Shirdi Sai Baba lived for 60 years. The mosque has a Shila (Stone) on which Sai Baba used to sit. Also, Shirdi Sai Baba lit the Sacred Fire (Dhuni) at the mosque, which always keeps burning. When Sai Baba resided at the mosque, he gave all his devotees Sacred Udi (Ash), which was believed to have the power to cure any suffering. Sai Baba also used to prepare food for distribution to the devotees in the mosque.

The Architecture of Dwarkamai Mosque Shirdi

The area of the mosque has two levels. The first level has a big portrait of Sai Baba and a big stone, which is believed to be where Sai Baba used to sit. The other area has two rooms which have a palki and chariot. A small temple is located where the chariot is kept, with a saffron flag.

On the second level, there is a large square stool, believed to be where Sai Baba took a bath. Along with this, the grinding stone and the vessel Sai Baba used to keep his Bhiksha (donation) are present on this level. In the mosque, one can find oil paintings of Sai Baba, which are the main highlights of the mosque.

Association of this Masjid with Dwarka

During Sai Baba’s time, Dwarkamai was called “the masjid”, or mosque. “Dwarkamai” became popular after Sai Baba passed away. It was first used when a devotee wished to build a pilgrimage to Dwarka in Gujarat, sacred to Lord Krishna.

Sai Baba said it is not required as that same mosque was Dwarka as it means “many-gated”, and “mai” means mother. Hence the name Dwarkamai or “many-gated mother”.
