The Markanda Group of Temples stands on the banks of the Wainganga River near the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. This beautiful temple complex is also well known as “Mini Khajuraho.” Markanda Temple is spread over 41 acres of land. The chief almighty of the temple is Lord Shiva.

The complex houses many shrines, including Varad Ganesha, Nagarkhana, and a Bhavani Temple. Unfortunately, most of the shrines are in deteriorating condition. But despite that, beauty can be seen all over the place. The construction of the Markanda Temple is credited to the Rashtrakuta dynasty, which ruled this region between the 8th and 12th centuries. There are many intricate carvings on the outer walls of the temples.

History

The history of Markanda Temple is nearly 1200 years old. The Indian Archeological department first recorded this 120 years ago in its survey. However, the Markanda name is derived from the “Markandeya Rishi” of Haryana, who was a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva. It is a group of nearly 24 temples confined to the riverside with entrances on either side. The hymn that young Markandeya chanted is known as the Maha Mrityunjaya Stotra. As per the legend, Vibhishan, the brother of Lanka’s King Ravana, once fell ill. At that time, Hemadpant, a Yadava, cured him. Obliged Vibhishan granted him a boon.

Many devotees gather during Shivaratri to do puja and get the darshan of Lord Shiva so that their lives are full of peace and prosperity. As a result, the environment is calm and peaceful, and you will get a feeling of ancient times.
