The Nehru Planetarium in Mumbai is a part of the Nehru Centre and is a renowned venue for astronomical and scientific education. Architect J M Kadri designed the place, and the cylindrical structure and the beautiful dome building intrigue many people. Students, astronomers, and other space research enthusiasts visit this place for various shows.
Inaugurated by Indira Gandhi, this dome-shaped structure was established in 1977. The Nehru Planetarium is hugely popular in most parts of India, especially among astronomers and space aspirants. The center has a concert and movie auditorium that conducts shows daily. In addition, exhibitions and international fairs are organized here, and different artistic works, audio-visuals, and photographs are housed inside it.
Nehru Planetarium history
The Nehru Planetarium was built as a part of the Nehru Center when it was constructed in 1972. It was set up as a center for studying science and humanity. The focus has been on the promotion of edutainment—education along with entertainment.
The planetarium was inaugurated five years later, on March 3, 1977. And over the years, the Nehru Planetarium and Nehru Center have become a preferred destination for eminent astronomy scientists, researchers, and others who study planets and all the motion above the sky. Science quiz contests, astronomy-themed painting competitions, and debates are also organized here.
