Mandu Travel Guide
Once a flourished and fortified city, Mandu or Mandavgad is located in the Malwa region of western Madhya Pradesh, India. Yet considered as a ruined city, Mandu serves as a celebrated tourist spot. Mandu has a varied history attached to it.
Starting from its golden age in the 14th century to the surrender of its rulers to Mughal forces, two centuries later, Mandu attracted the eyes of every conqueror-native or foreigner. The charm of the city’s bygone era can still be observed at its intriguing and pastel colored monuments. Besides its rich past of foreign rule, the city of Mandu also resonates with the love story of poet prince Baz Bahadur and his lovely spouse Rani Roopmati. Glimpses of the life of the couple can be seen through their separate architectural structures in the city premises.
Roopmati’s pavilion, which is a famous tourist attraction in Mandu was originally built as an army observation post. It is said that the queen lived here, while gazing to her husband’s palace. Just under the queen’s pavilion is the Baz Bahadur Palace, famous for its large courtyards. Other tourist attractions include Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal, Rewa Kund and Hoshang Shah’s Tomb.
