The only Thai temple in India, Thai Monastery of Bodhgaya was built by a Monarch of Thailand in 1956. The then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru requested for the construction of this temple here to strengthen relations of the two countries and spread the teachings of Buddha in India. Sloping and curved roof of the edifice is covered with golden tiles is an insignia of Thai architecture. As you step inside, a precisely sculpted 25-meter-high statue of Lord Buddha with his hair tied in a bun catches the eye. Corners are decorated with images and carvings of Buddha in different forms. This is a popular attraction of Bihar mainly for pilgrims and Buddhists. The aura is very serene and thus you can find many meditation centers near the monastery too.
