It is said that the Khasis of Meghalaya performed religious rituals here to commemorate Chan-Ubleis. Thus, the lake was formerly called Chan-U Lei-dubi. As the years passed, the local Rabha–Kachari tribes of Assam referred to this lake as Chan-dubi. Another legend says that a famous merchant named Chanda Sadasgar used this lake as a transit point to reach the Kulsi River with his merchandise to the neighboring state of Meghalaya. Thus, the lake became famous by its name, Chandubi.
