History of Temples in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh has a rich historical past. It was an integral part of Ashoka’s empire and obviously an important Buddhist center as well. Several dynasties ruled Andhra Pradesh and some of the names worth mentioning are the Satavahanas, the Pallavas, the Chalukyas, the Cholas, the Kakatiyas etc. Some of them were followers of the Brahmanical faith.
Being great patrons of art and architecture they encouraged the construction of temples. This would help their Hindu subjects to pray devotedly to the lord. What emerged was a large number of temples that date back to several centuries and still stand tall having successfully passed the test of times.
