A fine model of Indian rock cut architecture, the Undavalli Caves located in the Undavalli village in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. About 8 kilometers from Vijayawada and about 280 kilometers from the Hyderabad airport, the caves are popular tourist sites in southern India.
These 4th century rock cut caves are four stories. Inside the caves is a massive statue of Lord Vishnu in a reclining position. This statue is sculpted out of a single block of granite. Other shrines in the caves are dedicated to Trimurti, Brahma and Shiva.
The caves offer panoramic view of the Krishna River and the beautiful landscape around it.
History of Undavalli Caves, Undavalli
The history of the Undavalli Caves dates back to the 4th or 5th century when the caves were cut out of rock. It is believed that the caves are associated with Vishnukundin kings who reigned between 420 and 620 AD. The caves are dedicated with to Anantapadmanabha Swamy and Narisimha Swamy.
