Shaheed Minar Kolkata

Shaheed Minar in Kolkata is a tall monument constructed in Sir David Ochterlony’s memory. Hence, it was also known as the Ochterlony Monument and has stood for over two centuries. It is a 157 ft (48 m) high structure constructed with a brilliant design and robust material that makes it still standing. Shaheed Minar is one of the oldest and tallest structures in Kolkata that attracts history buffs and tourists worldwide. You can reach the top of this structure with the help of 223 steps and get panoramic views of the city. Moreover, to the south of the Minar, there is a big field, Shaheed Minar Maidan, which often holds political rallies and morchas. Rabindranath Tagore set this trend of political meetings.

History of Shaheed Minar 

Constructed in 1828, the Shaheed Minar in Kolkata reminds us of the great works and achievements of Major General Sir David Orchterlony, the British East India Company commander. Later, in 1969, the monument was honored with a new name, Martyr’s Tower, to praise and pay tribute to the brave fighters of India who sacrificed their lives for freedom. Today, it is one of the most appealing structures in Kolkata.

Architecture of Shaheed Minar 

The design of this building was done by architect J.P. Parker. It represents the symbol of peace and bravery and  is 157 ft. tall, and there are two balconies on the top, from where you can adore the beautiful city of Kolkata. The monument is an excellent blend of Egyptian, Syrian and Turkish construction styles.The structure of this monument is a perfect mix of various architectural styles. Shaheed Minar had a Turkish-style rounded dome, Egyptian foundation, and Syrian architecture. Apart from it, the winding staircases with 223 steps lead to the top floor of this monument. On top, you will find two balconies with a picturesque view.

Shaheed Minar is open for tourists from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm every day. You will not need to purchase any ticket for Shaheed Minar. However, official authority requires permission to get into this structure. Otherwise, you will have to witness the beauty of this architectural masterpiece from the outside. At night, you can admire the view as it lights up with different shades of blue, purple, orange and green.
