Peace Pagoda is an enchanting tourist place known as Japanese Peace Pagoda. This is a place for Buddha followers, and the aim of building the Peace Pagoda in Darjeeling was to develop peace and harmony among people of different sects of society. It is located on the slopes of Jalapahar Hills and offers stunning views of snow-covered peaks like Kanchenjunga. Thus, it is also an ideal place for nature and peace lovers. A Buddhist monk from Japan named Nichidatsu Fujii laid the foundation of this Peace Pagoda on 3 November 1972. On 1 November 1992, it was opened to the public. On your visit, you will see four avatars of Buddha, including Maitreya Buddha, built to gather people from different castes searching for peace. M. Ohka was the designer of this architectural marvel, and surprisingly, it took nearly 3 years to complete the construction. You can see the four avatars in Peace Pagoda, out of which one is the tallest freestanding structure in Darjeeling. Its height is 28.5 meters, and its diameter is 23 meters. Two concrete lions are at the entrance on both sides of the stairs. The statues of Buddha are carved on the walls with postures of sitting, standing, sleeping, and meditating. And all are covered with gold polish. Not just this, there is also stunning artwork showcasing the life of Buddha, and his relics are on sandstones. Mythological depictions can also be seen at Peace Pagoda Darjeeling, like ‘Gift of Mango Grove by Amrapali at Vaishali’ and ‘Great Departure of Siddhartha. If you visit the top of the pagoda, you will see amazing views of the Japanese Temple, located nearby, along with pine trees and snow-covered peaks. There are no entry charges. You can visit the Japanese Peace Pagoda any time of the year. The Japanese Buddhist Temple in Darjeeling is situated in the Jalapahar Hills. You can take a cab to this place from the town center, which will only take about 10 minutes. Earlier, cars were allowed to enter the main gate, but now you have to park the vehicle (if your own) and walk for 5 to 6 minutes from the main entrance that goes downhill uphill to reach the pagoda.
