Ghum Monastery, also known as Ghoom Gompa, is a popular tourist destination in Darjeeling, nestled at 2225 m above sea level. Lama Sherab Gyatso founded the monastery in 1850. The monastery has a 15-foot statue of Maitreya Buddha made from Tibetan clay. The yellow sect of Buddhists worships the site. The monastery houses about 300 beautifully bound Tibetan texts and wonderful old murals. Almost 30 monks of the Gelugpa School reside here.

How to reach Ghoom Monastery?

To reach Ghoom Monastery, you first have to reach Darjeeling. From Darjeeling, you can take a taxi, shared jeep, or private vehicle to reach Monastery. The monastery is about 8 km from Darjeeling town and can be reached by road in 30 minutes. You can take the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train) to Ghoom and walk a short distance to the monastery for an experience like no other.

Timings

The Ghoom Monastery is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. For the best experience, visit in the morning with fewer crowds. Additionally, at 7:00 AM, you can attend a prayer session, providing a unique glimpse into the monks’ daily rituals.
