Batasia Loop in Darjeeling is one of the famous tourist places renowned for offering a spectacular 360-degree view of Darjeeling’s landscape. You can spot majestic snow-clad peaks of the Eastern Himalayas and Kanchenjunga. The best way to enjoy the visit to Batasia Loop is by taking a toy train from Darjeeling to Ghoom. The middle of the loop is a beautiful garden around which the toy train track is laid. There are benches/seating areas where you can sit and soak in the beauty. The garden is about 50,000 square feet and is covered with grass and seasonal & perennial flowers and shrubs. Going back to 1919, when Batasia Loop was commissioned, there was a requirement for the toy train to be able to handle a sharp incline. After Ghoom, the highest railway station in Darjeeling, there is an incline from where the toy train takes you to Darjeeling. Thus, it was created to counter such sharp descent. It is considered one of the greatest engineering works. You can also visit the Eco Garden in Batasia to learn about organic farming and plantations in this hill station. In the middle of Batasia Loop, you will find a War Memorial opened back in 1995 to honor the Gorkha soldiers of the Darjeeling Hills. They sacrificed their lives in wars after India’s independence. You can also see a cenotaph and a soldier’s statue paying homage. There is also a small market at the exit of the Batasia Loop from where you can buy snacks like samosas and singers. Bags, hats, and other items are available to shop for visitors. A little walk further will take you to restaurants that offer good food with great views. You can visit any time between 5:00 am to 8:00 pm daily. You will be charged a minimal fee of INR 15 per person. Visit between April to June. Morning, around 9 o’clock, would be the best time to visit here to enjoy beautiful views, and it is when the toy train comes along. Batasia Loop is approx. 4.3 km from Darjeeling town and is located below Ghum Station. You can either take a car or a taxi, which will take around 15 minutes to reach Batasia Loop, along Hill Cart Road. The taxi will drop you and to reach the ticket counter, you will have to walk a little. Contact our tour experts for any extra information about Batasia Loop of Darjeeling.
