Attractions in Panhala
Panhala Fort
One of the largest forts of the Deccan region, Panhala Fort is a protected monument that was constructed by King Raja Bhoj. Built in the Kolhapur district, this fort was erected way back in the 12th century. This majestic fort is spread over a huge area below a steep slope. Considered an impregnable fort, it was the residence of the great Maratha ruler Chatrapati Shivaji during his reign.
Sajja Kothi
Erected way back in the year 1008 AD, Sajja Koth is a 3-storied building, which is an excellent example of Mughal architecture. Translated to Punishment Cell, this structure is also closely connected to Shivaji. It is believed that he used to make all his plannings in this Kothi itself. From the top of this Kothi, you can treat your eyes to an amazing view of the lush Waranna valley below.
Teen Darwaza
Translated to three doors, Teen Darwaza, is the massive entrance of the Panhala Fort, which consists of three consecutive gates on the western walls. These were the gates from where the British entered the fort. A popular tourist attraction in Panhala, Teen Darwaza also has a well, lying in its close proximity that was used to convey messages.
Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens, its huge well-maintained lawns, tall shady trees, cool breeze and the serene environment make it a well-known tourist attraction. These complicated gardens are maintained by the forest department. The arched entrance of the garden is like that of an old fort, a charming attraction. You can enjoy a leisure walk in the beautiful Peshwa Park or enjoy the serenity of the Bund Gardens. You can also partake in horse riding and boat riding here.
Sunset Point
Lying within the premises of the massive Panhala Fort towards the northern end, Sunset Point offers some amazing views to the visitors. Placed on a small tower in the fort’s northern portion, this viewpoint does not offers some enchanting views of the setting sun but also the lush beauty that is spread all around.
Jyotiba Temple
Placed at an altitude of 3124 feet above the sea level amidst the Panhala Ranges, Jyotiba temple is dedicated to Goddess Jyotiba or Dattatreya, an incarnation of the divine trinity of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh. Every year, this temple plays host to a huge temple fair on the full-moon night or Pooranima during the months of Chaithra and Vaishakh.
