A small town in Uttaranchal,Chakrata is located at a height of 7,000 feet above the sea level in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. The former name of Chakrata was Jaunsar Bawar, a small village of Jaunsari tribe. It is a perfect getaway for honeymooners and for those who are interested in doing nothing except for basking in the glory of sun. It was developed by the Colonel Hume and the fellow officers of the British 55 regiments around 125 years ago. It was a summer retreat for the high-rank officers of East India Company. The northern substandard regions of Chakrata are ideal for trekking and skiing.

By Train

Dehradun is the nearest railhead to Chakrata. It is around 92 kilometers away from Chakrata. Thereafter, you’ll have to take a taxi from Dehradun to Chakrata.

By Air

The nearest airport to Chakrata is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun. It is around 92 kilometers away from Chakrata. From here onwards, you’ll have to take a taxi to reach Chakrata.

By Road

The Grand Trunk Road serves as a perfect link between Delhi and Chakrata. The journey via road will take approximately 5 hours There is no direct bus service from Delhi to Chakrata. Chakrata is well-connected to Dehradun (92 kilometers), Ponta Sahib (70 kilometers) and Kalsi (98 kilometers) via bus.

Chilmiri Neck

One of the peak points in Chakrata, Chilmiri Neck is the place where mess and quarters of military cantonment is located. The panoramic landscape is studded with lush green plantation and dense forests all over. The cool and salubrious climate of this place makes it a much sought after tourist place. It is a perfect place for watching a large variety of birds and butterflies. From this point, one can enjoy the breathtaking views of Rohini Peak, Swarga Peak and Banderpoonch Massif.

Tiger Falls

One of the main attractions in Chakrata, Tiger Falls is an adventurous trek to the fall site. Originating from an altitude of 312 feet, it is one of the highest waterfalls in India. The view of the waterfalls is breathtaking and mesmerizing. This waterfall is located in the scenic backdrop of dark green woody trees. The water descending from the top accumulates in a small pond which consequently makes it an attractive location for taking bath.   

Ram Tal Horticulture Garden

A prominent location in Chakrata, Ram Tal Horticulture Garden encompasses different varieties of flora and fauna. The garden is enriched with an array of climbers, conifers, lichen, ferns and woody trees. One can also spot exquisite variety of avifauna species such as Black Headed Jay, Oriental Turtle Dove and Grey Treepie. Other main attraction of this horticulture garden includes an apple garden and a natural pond.

Deoban

Located in the hilly region of Chakrata, at an altitude of 2200 meters, Deoban offers mind boggling and eye catching views of the Himalayan ranges. This place is surrounded by dense dark deodar green forests and lush green meadows. One can sport large varieties of bird species found in Deoban forests include Himalayan Woodpeckers, Green Backed Tit and White Collared Birds. This place is also inhabited by large varieties of butterflies as well.
