Kedarnath is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites located in India’s Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. As one of the Char Dhams, it holds immense spiritual significance for devotees. Perched at an impressive altitude of 3,584 meters above sea level near the head of the Mandakini River, this sacred destination offers both spiritual solace and breathtaking natural beauty.

Temple History & Spiritual Significance

Kedarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, believed to be the most powerful deity in the Hindu trinity that includes Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. Set amidst snow-clad mountains near the Chorabari glacier on the Mandakini riverbank, the temple offers a spectacular backdrop of Himalayan magnificence.

The Legend of Kedarnath

According to Hindu mythology, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva to atone for their sins of killing their own kin. Lord Shiva, however, wished to avoid them and took the form of a bull (Nandi) to hide in the Garhwal Himalayas. When the Pandavas discovered him, Shiva dove into the ground. Bhim, one of the Pandavas, managed to catch the bull by its hump. The hump of this divine bull is what is worshipped at Kedarnath, while other body parts are venerated at four other locations, collectively known as Panch Kedar:
  • Navel at Madhya Maheshwar
  • Forelegs at Tungnath
  • Face at Rudranath
  • Hair at Kalpeshwar
A statue of Nandi (the celestial bull) guards the temple entrance, silently witnessing centuries of devotion. While the Pandavas are believed to have built the original temple, the present structure was restored by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE.

Kedarnath Temple Schedule (2025)

Planning your pilgrimage requires knowing when the temple is accessible:
  • Opening Date: May 14, 2025 (tentative)
  • Closing Date: November 2, 2025 (tentative)
During the six-month closure period due to harsh winter conditions, the deity is ceremoniously shifted to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, where pilgrims can continue to seek blessings.
