Located on the north-western side of Udaipur, Fateh Sagar Lake is noted amongst the most popular tourist attractions in the city. It is an artificial lake which was built by Maharana Jai Singh in the year 1678. In the later years of its creation, certain additions were made along its banks by Maharana Fateh Singh. Owing to such a contribution, the lake was named after him.
The construction of this 17th century man-made lake reflects an orderly and well-planned design. With three intake channels and an overflow channel, the lake is an absolute delight during the monsoons. Highlighting fact of the Fateh Sagar Lake in Udaipur is that it is embellished by three beautiful islands.
The largest of them is converted into a park, known as Nehru Park. Over the time, the island park has undergone various changes and today it serves as a nice picnic spot. It has a boat shaped restaurant and a small zoo for children.
Rest of the two islands boast of brilliant water-jet fountains and a solar observatory, which is one of the best in Asia. One has to commute to the respective islands through a boat, and as the lake is encircled by hills, the boat ride feels a lot enchanting.
