Trilokpur, situated approximately 23 km west of Nahan in Himachal Pradesh, derives its name from three significant Shakti temples dedicated to Bhagwati Lalita Devi, Bala Sundri, and Tripur Bhairavi. Among these, the main shrine of Mahamaya Bala Sundri holds profound spiritual significance and is widely recognized as the Trilokpur Temple. This architectural marvel blends Indo-Persian design elements and ranks among Himachal Pradesh’s most revered temples, surrounded by captivating legends and rich spiritual heritage.
Sacred Origins
Raja Dip Prakash commissioned the construction of Trilokpur Temple in 1573. Though dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple recognizes Goddess Mahamaya Bala Sundri as its principal deity. The sanctum houses a sacred ‘Pindi’ (stone) of salt, which according to local lore, was discovered by a merchant and became the spiritual cornerstone of this holy site.

Over the centuries, Trilokpur Temple has evolved into a prominent pilgrimage destination, attracting thousands of devotees during the bi-annual Navaratra celebrations. The Chaitra Fair (March-April) and the Aashwin Fair (September) transform this serene locale into a vibrant center of devotion, drawing both domestic pilgrims and international visitors seeking spiritual fulfillment.
The Divine Legend
The temple’s origin story revolves around a miraculous event experienced by a local trader named Ram Dass. According to legend, Ram Dass purchased a bag of salt that inexplicably remained undiminished despite selling from it throughout the day. That night, the Goddess appeared in his dream, instructing him to construct a temple enshrining the sacred ‘Pindi’ hidden within the salt bag.
Following this divine directive, Ram Dass approached the king with his experience, leading to the construction of a beautiful marble temple honoring the Goddess. In 1570, an additional temple dedicated to Tripur Bala was established nearby. The spiritual connection remains unbroken through generations, as Ram Dass’s descendants continue to perform the inaugural prayers (main pooja) at the Trilokpur Temple.
