Also known as Bakasura Malai, Droog Fort is a historic fort which is set at a distance of 15 km from Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. The fort is set at an elevation of 6000 feet from sea level. Droog Fort was used as an outpost by Tipu Sultan back in the 16th century. Today, the fort is almost in ruins yet is a major tourist attraction of Coonoor. To reach the fort, travelers need to trek for almost 3 km through Nonesuch tea estates.
There is a crumbling wall in the fort which stands as a leftover of the once proud fort. The attraction has much to offer to trekkers, hikers and nature lovers because of its picture perfect location. There is a watch tower set at the top of the fort from where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the beautiful surroundings.
The fort is must-visit for birdwatchers as they can get to see a lot of rare species of birds near the fort. There are a number of tourist spots near the fort including Catherine Falls, Lamb’s Rock, Sim’s Park, Dolphin’s Nose, Katary Falls, Wellington’s Golf Course and St. George’s church.
