History of Warangal Carpets

The history of Warangal carpets dates back to the Mughal era. It was when the Mughal army, that comprised of the artists and crafts persons, moved into the Deccan region and began the art of carpet making. There was abundant cotton that grew in and around the Warangal area which made carpet weaving much easier. The Warangal Carpets gained so much popularity that in 1885, these carpets known as Deccan rugs then, received an award for craftsmanship at the British Empire Exhibition at London.
