One of the most popular tourist attractions in Gangtok, Do-Drul Chorten is a stupa situated on a hillock in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Present at just a short walking distance from the notable Research Institute of Tibetology, Do-Drul Chorten Stupa in Gangtok can be recognized as a golden top dome. This golden top is, in fact, visible from different places in Gangtok.

The legend goes that evil spirits once haunted this hillock on the stupa stands, and people who wandered around this region used to become their victims and died. Later, in 1945, the celebrated lama of Tibet, Trulshig Rinpoche (Guru Padmasambhava) visited this place and established the stupa to drive away the spirits.

If you look at the architecture, the stupa has 108 Mani Lhakor (Prayer Wheels), which are rotated by devout Buddhists while chanting ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ (O Jewel in the Lotus) to invoke the Bodhisattva. Visitors too are allowed to rotate the prayer wheels in a clockwise direction. The Chorten Stupa preserves Kanjur holy books, relics, books of mantras, and several other religious objects. There are also several small stupas built around the main one. You can explore the monastery during your Gangtok tour. Contact Indian Holiday for more information!
