Kargil, positioned at an elevation of 2704 m, is roughly 204 kms to the western side of Srinagar. Kargil is this area’s second largest city. It also houses headquarter of the district. Many tourists come to this place round the year, lured by its picturesque locales and places of tourist interest.

There are many Tourist Attractions in Kargil. Due to its strategic location, Kargil also has a giant potential for adventure tourism. Many adventure tours begin from the base station at the Zanskar Valley of Kargil. Suru basin is another integral feature of Kargil’s landscape. Zanskar, half way through Penzi La pass, is one of the major Tourist Attractions of Kargil. Located on a sprawling terrain of more than 5,000 Sq kms, Zanskar stays cut off from the other regions for over eight months every year owing to obstruction of Penzi La. Kargil Tourist Attractions include the holy site located at Sani, called Turtot Gyat. It is counted amongst one of the eight holiest Buddhist locations of the world. Rangdum monastery, 130 kms away from Kargil town, also attracts many travelers to its small “museum” replete with attractive Tibetan as well as other artifacts. Tourist Attractions of Kargil also feature Karsha Gompa, an imposing complex that comprise of quite a few chapels, besides some residential rooms for its just about 150 resident monks.
