Starting from Gramphu, the road to Spiti runs up the incredible and glacier-covered Chandra Valley. Here, the tiny settlements of Chatru and Batal have famous dhabas. One kilometer past Batal, a rugged track runs north to the fantastic Chandratal, a peaceful glacial lake among snow peaks located at 4270 meters above sea level.

The path ends after twelve kilometers, and a footpath runs the final one kilometer to the lake. Starting from June and up till mid-October, one can stay in tent camps 3 kilometers before the end of the track, among them Jamaica’s Camp, which offers comfortable two-person tents and friendly reception.

From Chandratal Lake, hikers can reach the Baralacha La on the Manali Leh road on three arduous but heavenly days. Batal is also the starting point for hikes to Bara Shigri, one of the longest glaciers in the Himalayas. Still, the route is challenging, and it is imperative to travel with an experienced guide.
