When the whole of India winds up its festivities of Dusshera, celebrations in the town of Kullu begin. Famed as one of the most prominent festivals in Kullu, Dusshera is celebrated in the region for seven long days. It starts on the tenth day of the rising moon, also known as Vijay Dashmi, in October. The trend of the Kullu Dusshera festival started a long time back in the 17th century when King Jaganand installed an idol of Lord Rama on his throne. It later culminated in the consecration of the idol as the ruling God of the valley. Since then, the town of Kullu has been giving particular emphasis to this festival.

How it is celebrated

A merry-making affair in Kullu, the Dusshera festival involves displaying around 300 idols from the nooks and corners of the valley. It includes idols from the abundant religious temples in Manali as well. Various cultural and religious performances mark the week-long celebrations of the Kullu Dusshera festival. One of the best extravaganzas in the festival is the Ram Lila, which should not be missed at any cost.
