About Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary
Spread across almost 31 sq. km. near Ravi River and founded in 1958, Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary has a rich forest cover. Surrounded by coniferous and oak forests, the sanctuary houses numerous species of animals and birds, including bears, leopards, jackals, Pheasants, Eurasian Jay, black-headed Jay, and the Black Bird. Kalatop means ‘black cap’, which depicts the sanctuary’s thick and dense forest cover. It was an erstwhile gaming reserve for rulers of Chamba, now known for its serenity among tourists. Situated at 8 km from Dalhousie and is easily accessible by road. Tourists can hire a private taxi to the sanctuary and reach there within half an hour. It is located on Chamba Khajjiar road. The nearest airport and railhead from Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Pathankot, which is located approximately 95 km away. From Pathankot, travelers can board a government or private bus from the Pathankot bus stand to reach Dalhousie.
