Rajkot is a historical city founded by Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji Jadeja of the Jadeja clan in 1612. Rajkot was home to the Great Indian Leader, Mahatma Gandhi, who stayed here in the early years of his life, during which his father was a Diwan to one of the Saurashtra Nawab.

  • Kaba Gandhi no Delo

Rajkot is famous for being the place where Mahatma Gandhi spent the early years of his life. Therefore, visiting the Kaba Gandhi no Delo is a must. It is one of the famous monuments in Rajkot dedicated to the work Mahatma Gandhi did during the time when his father was the Diwan of Rajkot. 

Today, Kaba Gandhi no Delo is turned into a museum. It has preserved artifacts and provides a tour that takes you through Gandhi’s life. Classes are also held by an NGO on the grounds, which mainly involve sewing, embroidery work, etc. 

  • Ranjit Vilas Palace

Built by Maharaja of Wankaner H.H. Amarsinghji, Ranjit Vilas Palace is a historical monument in Rajkot. The architecture of the palace is a mix of Mughal, Dutch, Gothic, and Victorian architecture. The palace covers an area of 225 acres, and its maintenance has been the center of inquiry by many visitors. 

No visitors are permitted inside the Ranjit Vilas Palace except in some special cases and only after getting special permission from the present descendant of the Jhala dynasty – High Royal Highness Dr. Digvijay Sinh Zala. 

  • Watson Museum

Preserving many artifacts and items belonging to the Jadeja Rajput dynasty (founder of Rajkot), Watson Museum is one of the largest and oldest museums in Gujarat. It is managed by Gujarat State Government to revive the rich cultural heritage of the state. 

Apart from the varied artifacts, Watson Museum has a library with an extensive collection of books. It has a few counters from where the own published materials from the museum are sold to the public.

  • Khambhalida Caves

Rajkot’s forts and monuments include three Buddhist Caves, also called Rajkot Caves. Located close to the Gondal town in Rajkot district, these were first found in 1958 by P.P. Pangya, an archaeologist. Out of the three caves, the center one is named Chaitya and is a deteriorated stupa. 

Two sentinel statues (one is the stone of Bodhisattva and the other of Vajrapani) stand on a nearby cliff, looking like a hound, dating back to the 4th century A.D. The Archaeology Department of Gujarat maintains Khambhalida Caves, which are said to be the oldest in Rajkot.

  • Rashtriya Shala

Visit one of the best monuments in Rajkot, Rashtriya Shala institute. It is said to have been set up by Mahatma Gandhi over a land area of 66 acres. The institute was established in 1921, for which Lakhajiraj, the then-leader of Rajkot, donated the land.

This place documents the life of Mahatma Gandhi and is also related to the Non-Cooperation Movement. You can find many artifacts and segments relating to the same, along with India’s fight for independence. Today, this place is a school where students get educational and vocational training in khadi, cotton weaving, and manual oil pressing.
