Exploring Kerala’s Non-Coastal Treasures!
You must have scrolled through the reels and websites and found the best spots in Kerala. But the hidden truth is that there is a heavy load of attractions in the form of villages, hills, trekking trails, and waterfalls, which still have not been met with your eyes.
1. Kumarakom
My day started with a traditional breakfast at a homestay that had hot appams and stew served by a host who shared stories of his childhood.
A canoe ride through the backwaters, guided by a local fisherman, showed me a side of Kerala most travelers miss.
Highlight: Visiting a toddy shop and witnessing the locals’ way of life up close.
2. Silent Valley National Park
I laced up my hiking boots and ventured into the untouched forests of Silent Valley for Kerala inland adventure. The peaceful silence was broken only by the soft chirping of birds and the gentle rustle of the wind through the grass.
The highlight? Spotting the endangered lion-tailed macaque and feeling like I had stumbled into a nature documentary.
Pro Tip: Hire a guide; they know the park inside out and will enhance your experience.
3. Athirapally Waterfall
My drive to Athirapally was nothing short of cinematic as i went through winding roads, lush greenery, and the sound of cascading water in the distance.
Standing in front of the mighty Athirapally Falls was something else. The mist kissed my face as I soaked in the grandeur.
Don’t Miss: A short trek to Vazhachal Falls nearby for a quieter, equally mesmerizing experience.

4. Chembra Peak
I hiked the lesser-known trails leading to Chembra Peak and discovered a heart-shaped lake that took my breath away. I have never seen this, and trust me, i could not control myself to click the picture of it.
Witnessing the panoramic view and resting for a while can become one of your favorite moments in Kerala.
Fun fact: The lake does not dry up even during summer.

5. Aranmula
The moment i stepped into Aranmula, i knew this place was special. I could quickly sense the heritage woven into every corner.
I found myself in a small workshop, mesmerized by skilled artisans crafting the legendary Aranmula Kannadi, exquisite metal mirrors unlike anything I had ever seen.
Then came the Aranmula Boat Race, a sight of the majestic snake boats slicing through the water in perfect rhythm, rowers chanting in unison, sent a thrill through me.

6. Marayoor
I never imagined Kerala would have sandalwood forests, but Marayoor proved me wrong. As I walked through the fragrant groves, the air carried a rich, earthy scent that felt almost mystical.
It was a world away from the bustling towns where time seemed to slow down.
Beyond the forests, golden sugarcane fields stretched endlessly. Local farmers welcomed me with freshly made jaggery candy, rich sweetness, and the perfect taste of rural life. Surely, Marayoor was a hidden gem that I will never forget.
Must-do: Visit the sandalwood factory to learn how this fragrant wood is processed.

Tips For Kerala’s Inland Escape
You need to keep several things in mind that not only keep you away from disappointment but also enrich your experience.
- Don’t trust Google Maps blindly, as it can lead you to a cow’s backyard instead of a waterfall!
- Pack light, but always carry snacks as hunger strikes harder when lost in paradise.
- Learn to say “nanni” (thank you) often because it’s your golden ticket to local hospitality.
- Don’t argue with the weather, and carry an umbrella to embrace the surprise showers.
- Say yes to that canoe ride; otherwise, you will regret missing it when you remember your travel memories.
- Respecting peace and blasting Bollywood songs in the jungle will not impress the wildlife.
