Samode is quaint village, 42 km to the north west of Jaipur, nestled at the foothills of the Aravali Range. Samode used to be the home of the Rawals, who for generations served at the court of Jaipur as Prime Ministers. The Samode Village is dotted with traditional havelis that were and still are residences of aristocratic Rajput families. Being the gateway to Shekhawati, Samode is also home to some excellent murals and frescos, particular to the Shekhawati region in Rajasthan. The monuments and havelis in Samode exhibit exquisite Rajput style of architecture.
The Samode Palace is one of the most important and major Monuments and Havelis in Samode in Rajasthan India. The palace was built 400 years ago by the Rawals. However, the palace as we see it today was the result of later expansion and beautification. The Samode Palace is marvelous example of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Its elegant façade, the vibrant, colorful frescos and the carved hanging casements, a signature of Rajput architecture are to be seen at their best at the Samode Palace. The Samode Palace however, is now a luxury heritage hotel.
The Havelis in Samode are magnificent mansions used by aristocratic and rich families of the region. Havelis usually have colorful paintings and murals on the walls at times adorned with golden colors and chips. Intricately carved casements and jharokas are common features of havelis. Because it is through the windows and jharokas (filigree screen) only, that the women of the house could have a look at the outside world. Most of the havelis have massive carved wooden gates leading into a small courtyard; bigger havelis have multiple courtyards at times. These courtyards lead into larger courtyards. The main highlight of many havelis is the outstanding murals painted on the inside and even the outside walls. The paintings mainly depict life of Lord Krishna, war scenes in miniature. The Samode Havelis are no exception either.
However, most of these havelis are privately owned and are not open to the public and the owners may not appreciate your entry uninvited. And most of the haveli owners do not encourage entry with shoes on.
