History of Tamil Nadu

Introduction

One of the most popular tourist destinations of India, Tamil Nadu is blessed with picturesque locales and a heritage that dates back to ages immemorial. The history of Tamil Nadu dates back to as early as the Sangam Age which gives us the earliest recorded evidences of the existence of life in the region. The region was ruled by a number of powers which included the Cholas in the east, the Pandyas in the central area and Cheras in the west. A number of archeological evidences also throw light on the history of Tamil Nadu, some of which can still be seen today on a tour to Tamil Nadu.

As a result of her immense natural wealth, the state of Tamil Nadu had always been the pint of interest among the armies of different nationalities. The state was attacked by a number of armies including a number of Muslim invasions. This became even more frequent after the disintegration of the Vijayanagar Empire, which was followed by the establishment of a number of powers in the different sections of the state. It was only after the establishment of British supremacy in Tamil Nadu that the history of Tamil Nadu was to be framed in a more organized way. The history of Tamil Nadu also points out that the era of colonization in Tamil Nadu found a lot of powers involved in a struggle for supremacy over the region. These included major European powers like the British, French, Danes, and Dutch. The British who ruled supreme in the region also established a colony in the region which they called Fort St.George and which we today know as Madras or Chennai.
